Planting and Care:
- Plant your little Oxalis bulbs (technically rhizomes) in late spring or autumn, in a pot or straight out into the garden soil after all risk of frost is over
- Select an area with moderately fertile, humus-rich soil, that is in full sun or part shade
- If growing in a pot, use a well-drained soil mix of equal parts loam, leaf mold (or soil-less compost) and grit
- Set the oxalis bulbs 5cm, and space them 13cm apart
- Water moderately when in growth and, for best foliage and flowers, apply a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly between April and September
- Outdoors, in late autumn the top growth will die back. Pull or cut this away
- Provide frost-free conditions for the bulbs to remain dormant over winter. During this time the compost should be kept barely moist
- To freshen the compost, re-pot the bulbs every couple of years (when dormant), using the same pot, or move up to one size bigger
- Indoors, pots will remain colorful throughout autumn and early winter. At this stage, allow the oxalis plants to dry out and have a period of dormancy before starting them into growth again in spring.
